Beware of Phishing Scams

E-mail users should beware of "phishing" (pronounced "fishing") scams. Phishing is defined as the act of sending an e-mail to a user falsely claiming to be an established legitimate company, such as a bank, in an attempt to scam the user into surrendering private information that will be used for identity theft.

The e-mail directs the user to visit a Web site where they are asked to update personal and financial information, such as passwords and credit card, social security and bank account numbers, that the legitimate organization already has. The Web site, however, is set up only to steal the user's information.

If you receive an e-mail or pop-up message requesting verification of personal and/or financial information, chances are that someone is trying to lure you into a phishing scheme. These con artists are simply attempting to steal your identity and ruin your name and credit.

Liberty Bank, N.A. will never use e-mail to obtain or request updates to confidential information.

Should you receive such a suspicious e-mail, follow these steps:

1. Do NOT click on any links, open any attachments nor respond in any way.

2. NEVER provide any personal information using the contact information provided in the e-mail or on the bogus website! Instead, call Liberty Bank, N.A. immediately at 216-359-5500.

3. Forward the e-mail to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at spam@uce.gov by attaching the message to a new e-mail. This will ensure that all original headers are included. When sending the e-mail to the FTC, copy your local internet service provider's abuse center as well as Liberty Bank N.A. at info@libertybankna.com.

4. Delete the e-mail from your inbox.
